Tips and advice on reading

Top tips on reading and learning with your child throughout the childhood years...

Age 3

The key at this age is to talk about the story whilst reading and discuss the illustrations with the child.

Whilst using the ‘Watch the Story’ function on Storio, the animation will naturally create excitement and having the story read aloud will help develop their understanding of letters, vowels and phonics.

Age 4

Children are beginning to understand more about the alphabet system and are able to point to words that are often repeated and distinctive.

Ask general questions to keep the child motivated and keep the reading experience light hearted. If using Storio, help them tackle difficult words by using the ‘Story Dictionary’.

Age 5

Visit libraries to ensure that their knowledge and taste in books are broadened – introduce them to reference books about the world.

Ensure that the reading experience is still fun – after reading with Storio, play and learn with the story-related reading curriculum with specially designed ‘Reading Games’.

Age 6-7 and beyond

Children will be reading more fluently and enjoyment continues to remain crucial if the reading habit is to become a lifetime one. Choose books from the curriculum to ensure children are pushing their learning experience as far as possible.

Children don’t always let you know how they’re getting on at school, download the handy progress reports from Storio to ensure they’re on track and learning and developing as they read.

Keep it fun and keep children interested, introduce them to the different story cartridges available with Storio so they can play and learn with their favourite characters. Talk to them about their experience to deepen engagement.
